I have only just finished adding the first stage of content and getting ready to start building backlinks and already I am ranking 41 for a medium competition keyword and I mean I have done nothing to aide this position has any one had this happen before??? It all depends on what you've done on page, if you have got your keword in your title, meta description, and is one of the first things mentioned on your content as well as used in a H1 tag then it's a good start. Is this a blog that we are talking about? That means if you are using a good blogging platform then the software would automatically ping your site after posting a new article to fetch google bots and get you ranked quickly. The easy part is getting ranked the hard part comes when you want to start competing for the top pages! That's where a good link profile comes in (ie building strong backlinks) longer tailed keywords are much easier to target though so if you find that there is traffic for longer phrases they will be better for your conversion.
Thanks Yes this can happen if you have good and quality amount of content on your website. google search engines loves fresh and quality content.. At times domain name is enough in a low competition niche. Does your domain name has your keywords? some of the keywords I am ranking for relates to my domain but others don't and some are medium competition (this is not a blog but a gadget review site) I am so pleased at how well its done so far I've got a massive boost of motivation and within the first day of going live my site has had some adsense click gooo meee lol
I can't wait to see how my site does when I start building backlinks

Others possibly in your title and content. Good on you. ! Sometimes it can be done due to quality of your website's content and low competition on that keywords. It is a great news for you and if you haven't try to get quality backlinks then this is time to get quality backlinks for your website so that you can get more higher position in SE.

if your page's content and data is excellent and unique then no need to doing link building to seen in Google.. still it can't hurt to link build can it??? I plan building this site up naturally over a long period of time a hobby (my one love is websites and everything to do with them) Yes, but often it then bounces much lower. Don't get to excited yet and watch it closely. well from what I'm seeing I'm ranking higher by the day moved from bottom of 2nd page to one position from first page for a good keyword I targeted with medium competition just imagine what's going to happen when you start promoting it....
On a side note, a lot of sites that I build do not get marketed and links built immediately. I like to let the site settle in naturally and see where it stops, then go from there.
Just know that hitting page 1 will be pretty easy since you're already moving up so fast, breaking the top 5 will probably be a little tough and ultimately, getting position 1 will be the biggest challenge. That said, When marketing a site, I commonly see a site move up a couple spots, then fall off the first page, only to come back in a better position. a lot of people get frustrated and quite when it falls off thinking "what went wrong?" but it is normal. Good Luck! its all part of the fun really.
I've just started building back links nothing to mayjor just scouting out where I can find relevant links without the nofollow tag although I will be getting some links that are no follow for generating traffic. I think a good balance is what I'm going for with this site.
I'm also going to keep adding new reviews say 5-10 a week somewhere around that figure and keep the site growing with fresh unique content.
I put alot of work setting this site up so no point in letting things slip now
