Need to understand XML/EDI better...pls help.

I have read alot of articles about using the combination XML/EDI. How dothey REALLY complement each other? Why is using XML/EDI better than usingXML by itself or even EDI by itself. If a company uses EDI and intends tohead into the web-based direction, a program can be produced to enable thatright?Pls advise. Thanks.Chris
