Need help on making a directory, please

We are overhauling our site (thanks to some of your previous critiques :))and I am making a directory for certain link exchanges, a few affiliates, some features on our site and various other sites I feel may be of interest to our visitors. I've looked and looked, but could not find any resources on building such a directory, so I'm looking for feedback/suggestions/resources before I go any further with it (categories, number of topics, lay-out, design theme, etc. -- any and all help would be greatly appreciated). The URL: http://uptowncity.com/direct/index.htm
Thanx, Judy :)I suggest you look around on similar websites and see how they have done it. Find one or two you like and incorporate the functionality into your website.

I would be tempted to have a cross indexed list, one list would be by category and the other would be sorta like you have it now, strict ABC order.

I also like the way tucows handles this problem, using tables with category headings with the links below the headings, easy to read and understand. Here is a link to one of their mirror sites that shows what I mean http://pacificnetwave.tucows.com/win95soft.html
I think if you followed Kevin's advice and did something similar to Tucows, you'll have a very nice site. Thanks so much for the feedback. I took a look at Tucows and I agree that it's a nice set up and works well for them since they have a limited range of topics, i.e. computer related. UptownCity, however, is a general entertainment site, with a much broader range of topics -- almost anything goes, so to speak. While I'd really like to cross ref by category and by alpha, I'm having great difficulty trying to decide what the main categories should be and haven't seen any (other than the big boys like Yahoo, etc., whose directories go on ad infinitum), I could use for a guide. I also want to keep in mind that visitors don't want to have to click too many times to get where they want to go. There may not be a viable solution and I may just have to keep it alphabetized only, but thought I would give it one more shot for suggestions. Also, any advice on limitations, such as Top 100 Links, for example? Don't want this thing to grow to be a monster. (Sorry to be so long winded.) Thanx, Judy :)
