Right here goes, I'm a TOTAL novice at this stuff, I know access and database's, I've had a lot of experience with computers, but all this talk about linking databases to the web really dumbfounds and confuses me.
Anyway enough my naiveness...here are some questions:
1) What is mySQL (obviousily it runs SQL), but why would I want to use it?
2) What is php? why would I want to use it?
3) What is asp? why would I want to use it?
4) Why are there so MANY ways of doing the same job? Why isn't there just one way of doing it?
5) I've heard you can link an Access DB to the web how do you do this? I know there are very serious security issues involved - but if I know how to link an access db then I should be ok (I'm using Access 97).
6) Why can't I run php, mySQL, asp scripts on a normal W95 PC for? Why do I need a server? Where do I get a server? Can't I get software that runs like a server to check all the sql and stuff?
7) There are supposed to be three tiers or something - what are they? why are they important?
8) There is a Microsoft ASP training certification - is it any good - will I learn ASP? Is it worth the cost?
9) If I'm not linked to the web at home, and only at say University - how do I run Perl, CGI, PHP, ASP, mySQL scripts?
10) What books, sites would you recommend and why?
Would you mind posting all geninue and relevant replies to my address...thanks
