I've come across meta descriptions that act strangely. Take http://www.incorporate.com/choosing_a_state.html for example. The meta description is clearly "The Company Corporation helps you form an LLC or Incorporate in any state" but on the SERP the meta description appears as abbreviations of the the states. Why do you think this is the case? Google has been doing this for some time now-- they think they know your site better than you (this is really an attempt to combat meta spam) but they are picking info from your website that they think is more relevant to your site than your meta desc. and then displaying it in the search results. As mentioned, Google decides what to display in the search results that best suits the person's query.
