Mediawiki Cannot Be Installed?

I just downloaded and tried to install MediWiki version 1.7.1 and low and behold and I got this error message on install:

PHP 5.0.0 or higher is required. ABORTING.

My TCH server has PHP version 4.4.2. Other posts indicate that people are using MediaWiki, but the MediWiki site say earlier versions have security issues, so I am not keen to install these.

I installed PHPWiki from the Fantastico library, but I would really rather have MediaWiki. Does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps I should use an earlier version of MediaWiki since I am going to password protect the wiki directory anyways. Does anyone know what MediaWiki version works with PHP 4.4.2?
PHP 5 is not available and won't be available for some time.

There are two wiki programs in Fantastico that can be installed. TikiWiki and PHPWiki
version 1.6.8 will run fine on php version 4.4.2
To echo TCH-Andy, I got 1.6.8 up and running some time ago with no problem. Some functionality (such as support of mathematical symbols) is lacking when installed on TCH servers, but overall it runs quite well.
