I have had a reseller account for far too long and am paying $50 for 10GB of space. I am considering an upgrade so I figured it may be worth looking into a managed server, or a semi chunk of a dedicated server.
I already know about VPS and am considering one highly, but wanted to see what I could expect to pay for a managed server of my own.
No massive sites and no real forums or heavy processor sites going on. Just need Cpanel, and maybe RVskins+Fantastico installed.
What can I expect to have someone keep that server running like a Reseller Hosted account where I don't have to do anything in terms of updating/upgrading, etc????How much knowledge do you have as far as unix goes and commandline? I'd highly suggest initially going with a vps/vds as that may remain within your budget better. You'd also have the chance to get used to ssh/commandline on a vps before going to a dedicated which will greatly help you in the long run.As far as how much you should expect to pay for a quality managed server that can easily range anywhere from $150 on up pending on the company you chose. If you need something on a lower budget your best bet is to get an unmanaged server and contract out to another company for the management of it (such as PSM, rack911, and so forth, keep in mind I've not used either these are two that just come to mind and are discussed on WHT from time to time).Best of luck in your search.I am hoping to find someone to do 100% of the management. That way I don't have to experience down time. With my reseller I never think about that so it is nice and I don't want to loose that.Maybe all I need is a fully managed vps like liquidweb/servint offer?Expect to pay at least 100 buck and up per month. I know of a few places that offer much lower full managed services but most of them are at least 100. Good luck in your search.$100 would be fine.Think I would be better off with a $60 liquidweb managed vps if my sites aren't too demanding?$100 would be fine.
Think I would be better off with a $60 liquidweb managed vps if my sites aren't too demanding?
That is a smart idea. There is no reason to rush. You can just upgrade in future if you sites get busy. liquidweb managed vps would be great for you.Expect to pay at least 100 buck and up per month. I know of a few places that offer much lower full managed services but most of them are at least 100. Good luck in your search.
For truly fully managed dedicated server hosting, you can expect to pay around $500+ per month. This does of course depend on the hardware being chosen, the intensity of the service being served up and the quality of the network. $100 just can't cut it for fully managed hosting.
SimonI would like to say that I know of a few that you can get great management services and even pro-active management for roughly ~$100. This is for the management alone and does not include the actual server. Paying $500 seems a bit high for normal management task, especially if that is per server. But even still - you do pay for the level of service you get when it comes to management. (for the most part)I am sure that people would argue that point but it is merely my honest opinion. So come on guys, go light on me.If you pay around $200 or less for a dedicated server thats pretty good assuming the hardware is at standard level. I prefer WHM/cPanel myself because of how easy it is for users to navigate, etc..WHM is a lifesaver, however, you should expect to pay 80-100.Mike']WHM is a lifesaver, however, you should expect to pay 80-100.I think so too. Not more then $100That is a smart idea. There is no reason to rush. You can just upgrade in future if you sites get busy. liquidweb managed vps would be great for you.
I agree, no reason to rush. A vps would be a very good start. If you are only paying $100 for true 100% full server management, then I have little doubt your admin either doesn't know what he's doing or will be out of business eventually.
$100 is only $25/hour if you figure he spends 1 hour every week minimum to check in on your server and see how things are running. It doesn't include any time for actually fixing things, making improvements, answering concerns/questions you have, installing software, or his own office expenses and costs for his own business...
There should be a clear definition of the term "fully managed". In my opinion, "fully managed" means you never ever have to deal with the server. Ever. You simply hand the keys to the admin, and never worry or do anything. You tell them you want php 5 installed, and they do it. You tell them that the server got banned at aol, and they change the mail IP for you. You tell them that script xyz isn't working properly, and they take a look at it. Etc...
If you can find that level of "full management" for $100 per month, then I would go running in the other direction.
I guess I should have been much more clear when I asked the question.I am small time and have a current reseller account with less than 25 domains hosted. Most of them are small sites so traffic and resources probably aren't too much of an issue.I think a VPS is my best bet so if I outgrow it I can always switch to a dedicated. Are VPS servers from Liquidweb truly FULLY MANAGED????I've also considered ServINT and PowerVPS but it seems like Liquidweb's is the closest to a truly fully managed vps. Anyone agree or disagree?I have research through the forum and from the feedback I got, I shortlist the VPS provider into three (I've also test them with pre-sales question(s), all respond in 3 hours:
Knownhost.com
Virpus.net
Slhost.com
They are all offer managed VPS.(Knownhost said they are semi-managed) My experience so far (a few days) with Virpus is fine. They are helpful to cut my learning curve short.

I disagree. If you're paying $100 a month for someone to fully manage your server, if they are REALLY good, they will rarely have to fix anything - because it should all be done proactively. That's a pretty good bargain for both the customer and the provider. I wouldn't expect root access for that price though.
You can find decent fully managed servers for around $150 a month or so...and from providers that have been doing it for years.

Agreed,
Competent providers can compete in that price range assuming they've automated most of the mundane tasks and everything is properly monitored with pro-active fixes and automated responses to a number of common error conditions.talkhostrunner, managment comes in all levels, maybe it would help if you could tell us exaclty what services you would require.I just need cpanel running on a server for a few domains of my own, and a few clients. Nothing fancy, just reliable uptime, someone to fix email issues if they arise, update the server, and keep it online 24/7. If it goes down, they should reboot. If updates are needed, they should patch it.I don't want to have to think about anything on the technical side of the server. I don't mind doing anything through WHT/Cpanel, but I don't want to have to chase this server and constantly monitor it.I basically want something like a reseller account, which is ideally 100% managed.I'm thinking a Liquidweb managed vps is closest to that. Anyone agree?
