Hi Guyz,

I was wondering if Links within an H1 tag would like to much like spam?

Also Is this a black hat or white hat SEO method?

I see wordpress puts Links within an H1 tags is this good for seo? There is nothing wrong with putting links in an h1 tag, however, don't go over board with it by placing 3 or 4 of these on one page, if you do that then it will look like spam. i would second to banless; no problem setting link with h1. Exactly. In fact linking your H1's is a great idea. Just be careful you dont cross that keyword spam line. The H1 tag should be used only once on a page. For usability and SEO proper heading structure is required.
Quote: Heading structure is important not only to present a clear structure to the web page but also in consideration of those using text readers and the search engines. ...
...Heading tags are used to define the headings in your page. There are 6 available, h1 set of heading tags being the biggest and boldest and the h6 set being the smallest.

You should use them as you would if you were writing a book or article and not to highlight text in your page.... Reference: Heading Structure ?Heading Tag I was not planning on using the h1 tag more than once but using h2 & h3 also linking in them.

Would this look like spam? From what I have been told, its whitehat, quite common and a good thing to do. Its really nothing more than "headline" type which you would use in a newspaper or magazine article to garner attention to your piece and or ad. I'd imagine its use in an HTML capacity is not dissimilar and certainly not something I would consider to be BH.

So far since utilizing this practice I've seen no noticeable increase in traffic, sales, or positive change in SERP's. In fact on the site I tried this on, I did a number of dramatic changes based on advice of several experts at various webmaster forums, mainly based on the fact that various assessments of my sites keyword/description, meta, content, and H1 tags that were labeled ad lacking or missing or BAD.

So far, everything I have done has yielded no noticeable change to a 12 year old site that has no outgoing links, no google or other PPC, or affiliate crap. Just genuine and legitimate content and purpose.

I can do some of the dirtiest/crappiest things you can imagine with an Made for Ads type site and have it work. They don't last long, but make a lot while they do. Meanwhile when I make things super pretty, the opposite is true.

By dirty, I am not referring to BH, but really sloppy code, horrible content, and a terrible looking page.. much like those crappy myspace pages you see all over the place. Go figure? On a slightly different note, does having a H2 tag instead of a H1 make much difference? Its a difference of one headline type size

Sorry, could not resist. Quote: Originally Posted by visionwindowfilms On a slightly different note, does having a H2 tag instead of a H1 make much difference? Your question leads me to believe that you do not quite understand heading tags yet. You would not use an H2 tag INSTEAD of an H1 tag. It doesn't work that way . . . .

I agree, of course google looks at anything in a H1 tag as the most important item on the page and that is why you will see wordpress and other cms apps using it by default on your website title on pages. However, if you start using these links throughout a site, you are not going to get ahead, you are more likely to confuse the SE's than to receive benefit. Page structure is very important to Google, you would be best of using these tags as they are meant and not worrying about what H tag to use on your links. H1 tag with links would be a good practice for SEO purpose, IMO. But only use one per page. I think a normal page would not have 2 top level Headings.

Have a nice day, Putting the links within the H1 Tags is not something like a spam. It is come in the area of white hat seo factor. Quote: Originally Posted by supportivhost Hi Guyz,

Wordpress blogs use this without penalty

the H1 is the blog site name hyperlink

the H3 is the post title hyperlink Quote: Originally Posted by aceseo the H3 is the post title hyperlink Post title should be h2 not h3 to follow proper heading structure both semantically and logically when reading. I think AirForce1 hit it spot on...linking in the H1 is fine, but NEVER use more than one H1 on a page.
