Hi,
Do sites get delisted or punished as far as SERP or PageRank when linking to sites that are in a different industry (please note: I am not speaking of poor sites that engage in 'link farms' or anything of that nature; just honest sites that are in different businesses.
I ask this question because some site that are in different industries could have some relevance in other industry. For example: Fishing, linked to a site that discusses no fishing at all, but sells boats?
Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks! Probably not.
Delisting or punishment due to backlinks has been something the industry has believed Google would never do because it it to easy to manipulate. i.e. destroy a competitor.
Saying that, the recent updates from Google seem to indicate that this may be changing.
I'd suspect natural links that are crossing markets will not be an issue. Who knows if Google even considers things like that anyhow?
Your example actually has a semantic relationship and may re-enforce the context of the site. Fishing <-> Boats. Someone looking for a boat may be interested in fishing. Someone who fishes may be interested in a boat. They are often talked about in the same context.
If we want to talk Latent semantic indexing they are probably quite close:

This cannot be bad. I see what you are saying and found the link to be very helpful. Never looked at it that way. ):

This cannot be bad. How accurate do you think latent semantic indexing is?
How about "metal building and insulation" they are not close in LSI. However, a Metal Building can use insulation, and the insulation company would benefit from the Metal Buildings sites traffic (link). This makes them somewhat relavent to each other, would LSI detect this? As long as there is some relevance.. the boat and fishing example is perfect, a fishing site linking to a site that sells boats is a good idea! It may be a different industry but overall it targets the same people, people who fish like to go out on boats and fish. I dont think this is possible....
If I invent a product and it goes good (relavent) with a specific thing, Google will not know that, unless they are manually entering their LSI...
Thats why my question was, How accurate is LSI? I would like to receive backlinks from RELATED websites only. This can make you more sales than 100 backlinks on UNRELATED blogs/websites!

Ok here we go Again!
If you invent something, how will Google know if its relevant to something else?
What makes something relavent and what makes it more relavent then something else?
