Link Exchanging - Is It Honest?

I've read much about link exchanges recently and this author brings up an interesting point. Is it really honest to your visitors to recommend links simply because those sites have linked to you? Could it hurt the credibility of your entire site?

Would it make a difference if the links were placed on a "link page" as opposed to interspersed throughout the site? In other words, links as part of your content would seem much more like genuine recommendations (even if they're not) while a "link page" is more transparent.

What is the standard procedure for exchanging links? Interspersing your linkbacks throughout the site, or listing them on a "link page", perhaps in categories?

Do you think there is any validity to the idea that exchanging links is less than honest? Do you think it makes a difference how it's done? In other words, do you feel that placing the links as actual recommendations would be disingenuous, while perhaps a "link page" would not seem as such to visitors?

I've also read that link exchanging for SEO purposes is not as effective as it use to be. Do you believe this is true? If so, why? If not, why not? I would only link to sites wthat were useful to my customers, I wouldnt put up links just for seo. Quote: What is the standard procedure for exchanging links? Link exchange is one of the method to get backlink which provide PR juice to each other. This is the method to improve your PR. Hmmm... For getting higher Search Engine Rankings you will need high link popularity. The link popularity is calculated on the basis of numbers of the relevant sites linking to your website. Link Exchange is one of the methods to achieve high link popularity Just be careful on websites/ blogs that you're going to link to, it must be related and natural. Yeah. It will be good one but you need to check quality of site that you are going to link with. Linking does matters, however it adds an advantage when you link to better sites. To whom you link is also a major factor. Liking to many sites having PR 0 and linking to few sites having PR 3 and above will definitely matter Make sure you get quality links.. and don't use a linking service like GotLinks.com... I got penalized using such a service. I always prefer do link exchange to sites which are relevant to my site. I will consider their content and PR backlinks also. Most likely because it made your site look like a full link farm to Google, and Google doesn't like link farms. link exchange is still quite usefull. Worked for 3 weeks on one of my sites and I jumped from ranking 150 to ranking 13 by link exchange only. You don't call that dishonesty, because you are using strategies to get backlinks. Does SEs penalize for that? no, why because they agree to such link exchanges. If there is no law or rule anywhere that is stopping this, then how can we call it dishonesty?

also i would put relevant links on my site. So a relevant link on my site would ofcourse be helpfull to my customer. so where is the question of problem here? This is exactly what I was looking for. Opinions. I appreciate your input, and everybody else too! It can work but only if the exchange is very relevant to the search. Both sites need to be what the user is looking for. yes I agree to all above post..link exchange is one of the methods to get backlinks and most importantly in doing link exchange it should be on the same niche and in building backlinks it shouldn't be too rapidly generate backlinks to avoid to be penalize by SE.. Building backlinks naturally and linking with relevant sites is the best solution because if the site is relevant then it is pretty easily accepted by others. no one is going to click the link if the visitor in not interested in irrelevant topic. Agreed upstairs, but this is not so easy to do I always used one way link when i want to link exchange, it is important that the site that you are going to link with had high pr and has a lot of quality backlinks. we should avoid FFA links.
