Keyword Question for Home Page

So, let's say that you sell a website full a wide variety of Widgets.

As and introduction, I'm still a believer in filling out all my meta tag data whether it's considered "useful" or not

I'm cool with this whole concept on interior pages but my understanding breaks down a little on the index.html page.

Alot of folks make the kewords for their home page keywords that are mentioned all through their website - widgets, red widgets, small widgets, blue widgets, etc.

Is this a good practice or should one just make the keyword... Widgets?

All by it's lonesome?

I'm thinking this may be the way to go with all the sub widgets featured as the keywords of their own pages.

I just felt the need to touch base here as this idea seems to be contrary to what I see many SEO's doing in practical application.

Does this question make sense? It's one of those questions where I think I know the answer but since I'll be changing the way I've been doing things for 6 years, felt the need to put it in the road.
