Keyword Question - Can a short phrase be seen in a long phrase?

Say, for example, I am trying to rank for the keywords "Brea homes" and "Brea homes for sale" on the same page. Would Google and other search engines recognize that I am using both phrases in the page title if it is labled "Brea homes for sale" or would it only recognize that I am using the one?

I currently have a site that has these phrases in the Title Tag, Keyword Meta tag, and H1. Would it be most effective to just use the long phrase "Brea homes for sale" in the Title and H1 and use each one individually in the Meta Keyword area? Or is there a better way to approach this?

Hope that made sense and if not please let me know and I will try to give a better example.

Thanks in advance! can you tell me how many times "Brea homes" and "Brea homes for sale" keyword repeat in your content body ....... If you are trying to optimize your website with this long phrase -Brea homes for sale then short phrase automatically optimize. Sure they'll recognize the shorter phrase as well as the longer one. You might find that it'll be easier and quicker to rank for the longer phrases and the shorter phrases will take a bit longer. If you only have inbound links supporting the longer phrases, the search engines may not consider your pages for the shorter terms. While you may have the content related to the shorter phrases, your inbound links may not support it. If you use longer phrase then search engine will also notice the shorter phrase, but it would be difficult to rank for unless you are good at link building. Awesome, thanks for everyones responses!

Thats what I was thinking, but as I am fairly new to the game I wanted to check in for some guidence - so thanks!

@pegasus -off the top of my head I could not give an exact figure but they both show up fairly often and not all in the same instances.

@CReed & Reliable - thanks for both of your insight. I have actually had most of my link building pointing to "brea homes" and other city homes (as brea is only one of my city's of service) and am doing better for that than the long phrase but of course that comes from my link building. Think I'm going to start implementing more of the long phrase in to help that out and based on this discussion will probably do some changes to my site design/layout to better optimize my keyword and internal site structure. It is a bit funny how you find out many different things along the way that require substantial changes but in the end it all works out haha. Thanks again! Usually longer keyword makes more traffic for you. Also ranking high for shorter keyword is more difficult and if you choose longer one, you can firstly rank for the long term, then for shorter term but by choosing shorter term at first, ranking high for both of them is difficult. True but what are your thoughts if I say use my H1 as "brea homes for sale" and have strong inbound links for both "brea homes" and "brea homes for sale"...should this be good?

OR is this better??? EXAMPLE AT: www DOT yorbalindarealestatepros DOT com

...I use the H1 for "yorba linda homes" and an H2 for "yorba linda homes for sale"

which would be more effective for getting both to rank on that particular page?

Thanks for the advice!
