Keyword density: How much is too much?

I read somewhere that you should repeat at least 3 times your targeted keywords in the body of your website.I was wondering if there is an upper limit on how much you can repeat your keywords before they start hurting you with the search engines (i.e. the search engines discard them as spam).Anyone here knows?Really unsure on this - as it is said search engines discount them as spam, yet when I check some results it is filled with what I would say is spam and low quality content ( some results) or just totally irrelevant... weighting to off site links and irrelevancy seems to really put a lot of garbage in many results. It becomes too much when you use more than you need.Google have got pretty good at spotting writting patters, And if they think you are cramming keywords in the page it will drasticall effect your SERPS.. Best thing to do it write a natural looking page that would be easy to read, Use the keywords where you need them (especially in h1 and title tags) and nowhere else.Sometimes a word like "he", "she", "they" or "because" can be more benificial than the keyword it's self, because then google recognise that as being descriptive contrent.Long gone are the days when the page with most occourances of a word turned up first in serps.
