Keyword density, anchor text and Benjamin

In the past, I've question how some sites managed to rank above others when they were showing fewer inbound links, lower overall keyword density and less PageRank. I saw quite a bit of effort by some who were chasing links and without much regard to anchor text getting nowhere.

I found that those using varied terms in their visible copy, and anchor text with topically related keywords were ranking better for their primary keywords as well as related keywords with less effort (fewer overall links and lower keyword density than sites pushing just their primary keyword).

So how can you easily find keywords that are similar enough to your own? If you want to be on target and tightly focused, we should ask Google.

No, don't throw a rock with a Benjamin and your cellphone number taped to it through a window at the plex and go wait in your car for an answer.

Google has a great feature that I see rarely used. Similar or synonymous searches. (Not the link in the SERPs below a result labeled Similar which is also helpful).

If you prepend a word with a tilde (this thingy --> ~ ), Google will return related or synonymous results. Check out the bold keywords in the titles and descriptions, and the bottom of the page for related searches. This advanced search operator works with just a single word as opposed to phrases.

Use these keywords when composing your copy and anchor text. Search for potential sites related to your own to send a few link requests to or to
