Just a thought?

I was in a weird design mood today and wondered if i could create the bottom start bar in Windows Xp in css with javascript. Could this be done with minimal DOM scripting as say everything would be done using the mouse hover event. As i know basically none or little javascript or DOM i was wondering if it could be done.

Any helps is appreciated.

EDIT:
The more i think about it this post doesnt really fit this forum as much as it did when i posted any mod feel free to move it.Funny you should mention this! I actually tried doing something similar a month or so ago, but rather I tried to reinvent a whole version of Windows in a webpage. After a few hours of scripting, however, I was depressed at how little progress i had made. I'm sure it would be very neat if done properly (and if you made a layout out of it, I'm sure you could submit it to CSS Zen Garden). Here is the little progress I made (likely won't be able to get to this page, as it is on my extremely slow server): <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://216.36.173.149/other/windows/">http://216.36.173.149/other/windows/</a><!-- m -->.
-DanDoesn't sound too difficult, I'll have a go and post my results tomorrow. Here's what I have after 3 hours (I didn't start it straight away).

So far it's totally CSS and I haven't worried about cross browser compatability, it's absolutely bleeding edge and only works in Netscape 7+ and Mozilla, Opera struggles a bit with positioning the start menu and IE is just a joke.Hey lavalamp good attempt much better than my attempt and yours is 100% css.

Daniel the link didnt work but you said it might not work anywayObviously for any practical use it will need some DOM scriptage. If it only works in Mozilla then there's no point to it. I'll try and make a fancy cross browser version with a few extra features, no promises though.Sounds good lavalamp but if you dont have time or that dont mind;)I like challanges, the last one involved getting an image to cross two columns of text. It was Greg's idea and I went away and made it. I'd find the thread but it seems to have vanished (along with Greg). For some weird reason it wont let me unzip the file ive tried everything anyone else had a problem.Lavalamp- your startmenu.zip file; I think it's corrupted. When I Download ed it, it shows up as a FILE names 'start'- no extension or anything. And then if I open it up in notepad and save it as start.zip, it says something along the lines of 'cannot open, file is corrupted'.

EDIT: It seems Firefox has Download ing issues, IE Download ed it just fine.Originally posted by omega

I'd prefer to think of it as, the forums were broke when you tried it in FF, but they were fixed when you tried it in IE. ;) No, I think it's just that the forums are broke, but IE pretends that they aren't.. Either that or it's an FF bug, because recently I haven't been able to Download ANYTHING in a zip file from these forums with Firefox...I think it's a bug with FF. I hate to say it, but as far as multimedia goes, Firefox sucks. IE has always been able to handle flash, video, and Download ed stuff- has a easier (though uglier) interface for it, too. </offtopic-rant>A bug that FF has just developed spontaneously? I'm still using FF 0.8 so that can't be right, also I don't have any trouble Download ing from anywhere else.Kool do Mozilla know about this bug or was it elimated in 0.9.So far I've Download ed 1000's of files from here using FF 0.8, recently 2 files were corrupted. I think the bug is with the forums don't you?Originally posted by omega

Just add the extension. I get stuff like that all the time when I Download attachments. Just rename it, adding the proper extension, and you'll be good to go.
