Read this post "seoconsultants.com/articles/1000/url-rewriting.asp" of rewriting you will get lot of idea! URL rewriting usually is done (when looking at it from an SEO viewpoint) to place keywords in the URL of the page. This is a factor in ranking but please realize that there are tons of other factors. I personally feel that it is important to place keywords in the URL but I know it's not the end of the road if you're only trying to optimize for a low to moderatly competitive keyword. I agree, you might as well do it upfront and get it over with, it sure wont hurt you. A good idea to start it early on the design/development of the site.

Just try not to over plump the URLs with keywords and try to have a good structure form the outset too.

This might be a bit too much but you get the point;

but it is better than;

http://www.mysite.com/keyword-2nd-ke...-few-words.htm

goodluck! I think url rewriting is good for optimization purpose,but not in a big way.Because you can't get good results only by url rewriting.Many more things are necessary for getting good results.I personally see some websites are getting low rankings, even in their url keywords are present. If your site is already getting lots of traffic, I won't recommend a domain change. Otherwise, change it and use a 301 redirect. One good old rule which still is functioning is that in the SEO world, fixed and static web formats can always be preferred, like the web pages addresses as well as the links formats. If your site...is new....and your URLs is dynamic ? then you need to redirect your dynamic URLs to seo friendly URLs because dynamic URLs takes long time...to crawl with search engine... but if you get more traffic with dynamic URLs then you have no need to redirect your dynamic URLs. Yes,

I completely agree with Methu09.

If your site is dynamic then you should use url rewriting otherwise dont need to use it.

Url rewriting is beneficial for SEO.

URL rewriting and URL redirecting are two different things, rewriting is all done within the code of the site, and generates nice human readable text based URLs.
Redirecting on the other hand just sends the browser from one page to another, which if done badly can really hurt your SERP's.

The only time I would advise anyone to redirect one URL to another is if it's for a premanent redirect (ie you are retiring a page and want the spiders to drop the old page from the index and pick up the new page. (okay there are other places to use redirects, but be careful with them)

Also I am not sure about the; "because dynamic URLs takes long time...to crawl with search engine"

Dynamic URL rewriting should not take any longer to spider (unless your webserver/database/code is badly done.
I have 000's of dynamically writtin URLs across a large number of clients sites and all of them are fully indexed and spidered regularily.

If anyone has any stats on static URL vs dynamic URL spidering I would ber really interested in seeing it though! Hello Friends,
Thanks for your suggestions and help.

Thanks,
[removed] I agree with "chillfire" which is give nice information. Well URL rewriting may be good if your site is dynamic, newer and not performing well. However SE's start indexing dynamic urls but still Changing dynamic URL to static URL helps SE' to index it more easily.

But in case your site is older and performing well then it will not good to rewrite its URs however it is a site with lots of dynamic web pages. I think url rewriting is efficient if it is supported by the targeted keywords of the page,eg: if i have a site www.abc.com about the electronic products and in it i have a dedicated page on mobile phones, then the site url must be www.abc.com/mobile_phones and the keyword "mobile phones" must be the targeted as the main keyword. url rewriting is needed to make your site seo friendly. Makes your site seo friendly so YES it helps .... When you rewrite your URL and its dynamic it can help you getting more traffic though you have to consider some other factors like rewriting it in much shorter one.
