Hi,Today I come across a lot of free file storage sites providing free service to upload and downlod files. (ex: rapidshare, megaupload etc.)They have huge Google Adsense banners on the site. Is this a good way to earn? I wanted to start my own free file storage site. Is this a good idea. ?Any comments please.Thank youJoI wouldnt have thought so.Think about it like this, each visitor to your site isn't going to be downloading a few pages of text, they are going to be downloading and uploading substantial files. Server costs on those sites are huge. Would need a dedicated server really. To cover costs with adsense you would need a massive click through rate.thanks meman. that was a valid point.Yeah, I don't think it'd be worth it.Besides what meman pointed out, even if people were coming to your site to view the content and click on ads, what kind of ads is Google going to be showing? It can't pick up image content, so unless people are going to be putting in titles, descriptions, keywords, etc. for every image they upload, you've no idea what ads are going to be displayed.Definitely not something I'd be doing for AdSense.I run a website successfully off of AdSense ads, so I come at this with good knowledge. My website, mybannermaker.com, offers free hosting for banners made with the site. I transfer over 10GB of data a day and run a dedicated server that costs over $200/month. I make a boatload of cash for the little work I do daily ($5,000/month). The trick with this is targeting your ads to your visitors and the ad placement is key. If you experiment with different ad positions and embedding different keywords in your page you have potential to make a significant amount of money. The thing to watch out for here is that if you will be hosting large files you will need a server with a lot of RAM and a system for limiting throughput per connection. Without this, you will hit your transfer limit quickly and you might not have a lot to show for it. Hosting smaller files (2mb and less) can be much more rewarding, proof is as follows: At a 2% CTR we would need 50 pageviews to get 1 click. This is at most 25 files uploaded, meaning about 10-25MB of disk space, plus maybe 1GB of bandwidth over a month. For that 1 click you could easily make $1, so you would need to pay less than $1 for 25MB of disk space and 1GB of transfer. I pay $200 for a nice server with 2500GB of bandwidth and 120GB of disk space. Breaking that down, I get 12.5GB of transfer and 600MB of disk space for $1...making our business a profitable one. I suggest reading up on marketing and servers a bit before jumping into anything. You will need something unique for people to select you over ImageShack or PhotoBucket, meaning the actual hosting is only half of it. Corey
