Here's my situation.
Let's say I want to rank my homepage for a set of keywords, which will get me 10k visitors per month (as an example)
But then let's say I have an internal page, which is optimised for another set of keywords, and gets 50k visitors per month.
Is this ok? Is it perfectly normal for an internal page to get more traffic than the homepage? Or if that is not the case, shouldn't I just optimise the homepage for the highest traffic keywords instead?
It's just that the homepage is quite "broad" and covers many topics, acting like a portal to different areas of the site, so it's likely not to be as relevant to many users if I tailor it to very specific keywords, such as those that would get 50k highly specific visitors.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance simple answer is YES!
I will site an example: an e-commerce sites... internal pages are more aggressive in the SERP than the home page because this is properly optimized... This is perfectly fine. A lot of times (not saying this is your case) the main page won't have a whole lot of information on it. Internal pages will have a lot more specific info that can rank well for search engines. it is okay. infact thats what most of those people who owns a niche which is too competitive.
they just try to rank a single page of their site with long tail keyword. I would leave it and keep building new pages the different variations of keywords. This way you'll have even more visitors.
Question: Does this mean you acquired a lot of backlinks to this secondary page? Usually pages only rank high for significant keywords if they have a combination of good onsite optimization (good use of keywords) and good offsite optimization (lots of links with those keywords in and around the anchor text). Or are you speaking hypothetically?
I'm just curious how you achieved this. Yeah its fine.... there's nothing wrong in promoting the page the way you like... You can also use the link to build backlink for the particular page.... hi,
thanks for the answers
yes, I am also building lots of back links to the internal pages of my site...this gives my site an overall higher value in SE's, rather than just my homepage having all the links
so yes, good onsite and offsite optimization is my strategy.
also, all my content is good - it is designed for readers first and SE's second
thanks again
