Is it important to learn XML? [closed]

I have sufficient knowledge in XHTML and CSS and I am currently learning PHP and MySQL.When I thought learning XHTML and CSS is sufficiently enough, my friend advised me to learn XML as it is important in terms of Web Services.Can someone clarify how much XML is important?
