Is it ever acceptable to have a horizantal scroll?

I'm designing a site right now that I think would work well having a horizantal scroll.

Basically, I need to display 30 images on the main page that will each be about 125x125. Clicking on these images will bring you to a more detailed product page.

Is it just totally wrong to have a horizantal scroll, no matter what the situation is or can it be done if done well?totally and morally wrong... lol :D

no, just kidding. I don't think many people like it, just like the popups. most of the time it looks like poor programming. To me it is just annoying. I don't think you can make it good enough to justify the cause of you using the horizontal scroll.

why couldn't you just make the pictures go down instead of off to the right? just curious.do you have a link or a peak at your ideal layout? in most cases more then 12 links on the start page for any site besides (news sports ect) is considered excessive. You might want to consider using something like 35X35 images with a text caption (activated with css) to save load time.

tell us a little more about your options and we can help some more!
thanks!

I may end up trying to break it down into categories to reduce the number of images on the main page.

The H scroll thing was just an idea I had, probably not a good idea now that I think about it.

Just thinking outside of the box....or browser if you will. :DOriginally posted by Duck Man
(Numbers are based on the sentances above)
1. That excuse is getting used a lot lately :). Just kidding.

2. Not a bad idea.

3. Never hurts to ask.

4. :) Something everyone should try!Id go with a DHTML menu along with pixel :monkey: 's idea of smaller thumbs. A side scroller menu ( www.dhtmlcentral.com ) should work out nicely, while adding atractgiveness to the page. The author of that site has many DHTML menus which are compatible with IE5+, n4.7, and N6.Is it just totally wrong to have a horizantal scroll, no matter what the situation is or can it be done if done well?
Duck Man,
I am one who threw caution to the wind a couple years ago and intentionally wrote a page to have a horizontal scroll. See:

http://rocq.home.att.net/pseudoGrey.html

The page is in minor need of update, but it should let you test your gut reaction to it being done by someone else.

I personally can't decide if it is good design or just a conceit. The fact that I haven't done it elsewhere probably tells me something, though. :)I don't like have to scroll Horiz. myself. I like to see the main portion in one screen. I guess their is one exception...if it was a girly site :) then you could scroll hor. for miles :)The problem is not a horizontal scroll as such. I think in certain circumstances the horizontal scroll would be quite justified. Suppose for instance, that your subject was the Great Wall of China, including a map (or something) of the wall?

I think the important thing is that the window never, ever, in any resolution or window size you can reasonably expect (even when someone is working on a spreadsheet and trying hard not to let the boss notice that there is also a browser window)....

Lost track of my sentence here. It should never, ever, scroll in more than one direction. If your page is only 250 high, why not?

Another question is how wise it is to put 30 images on the same page. I believe there is still one or two people in Botswana who are still using modems.Check this out:
