If you received a managed dedicated server...what do you expect to have been performed on that machine initially?
We are reviewing processes and procedures at present and would like to know the general concensus as to what should have been carried out on the server before being deployed to the customer.
As a customer, what software do you expect to be installed as standard? As a server administrator, what would you expect to have been done to ensure the server is secure?
Can relate to Linux - PLESK, DirectAdmin, cPanel, Plain configurations...DNS setting, firewall setting, spam filter, antivirus and some other modules installed ( eg.: ffmpeg & co ), and all the standard modules, GD, zend optimiser and co... And also want some kind of mrtg graphs software like cacti or other...From my experience there is no one configuration to fit all/most when it comes to a server. Some really only need the mere basics while other need almost everything including the kitchen sink. I see no need to install anything your client will not use other then whatever security measures you decide upon.
I would really like to see more hosts offer a checklist in their server order form to allow for most things to be added at setup. While it may confuse some if the options are not clear I think if it is done properly it would be a nice feature.the thing with managed solutions is you (as the admin) deploy the box with all the network information for the server to function on the network such as DNS/IP etc and security and antivirus, however most clients say they want x antivirus in which case you have to do what the client wants hence it being a managed solution.so to answer your question theres no set list, as your find most clients give you orders straight off the bat with how they want things setup.if they dont I personally normally deploy servers with network info, firewall, antivirus basically just generally make sure its stable and secure / uptodate.
