Who knows a really good editor? ( Dont like notepad ) Ive used several, UltraEdit being my favorite now, but Im interested in what the pro's use.

Oh yeah, cheaper is better.I think Eversoft's "1st Page 2000" at http://www.evrsoft.com/ is excellent. It's free.

Very simple and easy to use is "Arachnophilia 4.0," also free. It's at http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/ Hope this helps. :)I use Homesite/ coldfusion.pico ;)

seriously. i use ultraedit and homesite. but only because notepad won't let me open two files at once conveniently.I can open more than one instance of notepad, then again I have a new model. also I used ConText which can open many different files in the same window that has tabs to each one. also color coding. so I guess I don't use any html editors. ;)Arachnophilia small and quick......
And this one: whow and good.....
Speed up the loading time of your web site! Use the "GIF Optimize" feature of the Image Beauty Browser/Viewer++ to reduce the size of GIF images!Originally posted by scoutt
what i meant was that notepad doesn't do the many files in one window thing. homesite and ultraedit do. and, of course, they do the colour-coding and html validation, too.Arachnophilia does it for me, you can use it for any file format you may be using (html, txt, php, cgi, asp, js etc...). Tools, consist of Site uploader, dictionary, html analyzer, calculators, code beautify tools and a find-and-replace feature.(plus more)
I like it. :)Two words:
I got three words

1st Page 2000 :)I use Homesite/Cold Fusison studio.

Homesite is an excellent product -- it lets you stay close to your code while providing helpful shortcuts that are actually *helpful* and don't add a bunch of bloated code. It also comes with TopStyle -- and that is a nice little perk.

Homesite is about $90 and it includes ColdFusion light. It's not a full version of Cold Fusion -- but it works for the bulk of the simple stuff. You can Download a 30 day trail version at www.allaire.com

Another nice code editor (and it's nice because it is also a really good Java editing tool) is Textpad. It's available as shareware -- License costs about $30. I like it becuase it uses colored text for the code (for ease in reading) and also has some fairly decent debugging tools and a good HTML validator.
Take a look at www.textpad.com

Those would be my picks.

BethSorry but if you want the best or want to be a pro then you dont need Dreamweaver but IT IS THE BEST EDITOR MONEY CAN BUY (?00 or $200 dam you Yanks get everything cheeper).

If your site has many HTML pages you can update them almost as quickly as having a dbs driven site (well almost)

But you cant create images or do really really good mouseovers very quickly - For this then I would use Image Ready (part of Photoshop 5.5/6 very expensive ?00 but Paint Shop Pro is just as good ?0)

I use ImageReady 2.0 and Dreamweaver to create www.futuremovies.co.uk

For my portfolio I used ImageReady 2.0 and Notepad to create www.johandesilva.co.uk because Notepad did the job better than Dreamweaver because there was no HTML text involved and lots of complex Java and layers that Dreamweaver would not handle at all well.
------------->To supplement you with a fuller answer the big ones I've seen are

Macromedia DreamWeaver UltraDev 4.0 (http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/) $199
Microsoft FrontPage 2002 (http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/) $479

I am meerly quoting the first price I saw on they're homepages..

I've used both at school (earlier versions) and I love to hate FrontPage. It will insist and put-back-in-after you delete code, IE only code, garbage code that is not needed. I would have to use Notepad afterwards to manually remove or change parts becaues it thinks it's right ; I have actually seen an instance it overrights MY RIGHT CODE with it's INCORRECT code.

Below,
If I delete these META tags in HTML-mode, go to normal and back to HTML-mode, they will be re-inserted. If I try to save immediately after deleting, they will be saved into the new file before I even switch between modes.
..</tr..>..
..</table..>..
You get the idea I'll give you three guesses which program I'm using on my homepage these days...

---

P.S. I say people first learning HTML should do it in NOTEPAD. No auto-insertion/completion of code. It forces you to learn the language, debug it until it works... If you learn it the hard way first, you will better appreciate the convenience an editor brings.Yeah, I have a client who came to me and said "well my ex-wife designed this site in Frontpage" but I am having all sorts of problems and it doesn't work at all in Netscape.

Gee . . wonder why.

Anyway, I agree, start learning HTML in notepad. Then use Homesite -- which is now merged with Dreamweaver (see the new products from the Allaire/Macromedia merge -- VERY COOL.

But for the love of heaven, DON'T use Frontpage. It's evil.

One more thing while I am on my soap box and ranting. What's with this all caps code crap in Frontpage . . .and not putting quotes around attributes?!? -- yeah, now that is going to help compliance issues

grumble.
