href (click result, IE)

Can someone explain to me what determines the type of dialog box that Internet Explorer browser emits when one clicks on an href. I sometimes get a "save as" dialog, sometimes a dialog offering the choice between "open from its current location" or "save", sometimes that same dialog box but with one of the choices disabled, etc. I have not been able to figure anything in the <a> tag or anything related to href that would explain those differences. The servers I'm referring to are UNIX servers, but the browser clients are Windos 2000. Indulging my ignorance, can anyone let me know something about this?<!--content-->This can be controlled via php etc, but it usually depends what type of file it is.<!--content-->
