How to stop attacks

hi

when i accessed my forum today i found that it was hacked. well it had this big like announcement saying i was hacked, so i logged in and since i was admin it said on the top alert: boards are off. so i turbed it on and everything is fine

how did the hackers get in my forum and what can i do to stop this

put htaccess for admincp folder and try to use high security level passwords.
