How to know when and who to hire for SEO

I've been reading and listening to people talk about SEO for years now. I get the idea of it and have read sooo many different strategies. We've talked to a few "SEO" people/companies for hire recently.

My questions are

When do you decide that you should stop trying SEO on your own and hire someone?
Should I be worrying about content and let someone else do our SEO work?
how do you pay some one to do this kind of work?
Should I be paying them to get me back links or should I be paying for consulting?
How do I know the company I hire isn't just using some automated spam system to spew our link all over?
I obviously want to trust whoever I hire for anything but how do you know they aren't doing something shady that could hurt you in the long run?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated Thanks! Word-of-mouth, reputation on the Internet, the quality of sites already listed are indicators to choose an SEO professional.

The SEO is very expensive, it may be worth hiring an SEO professional. Everything depends on the financial stakes of the website ! My current SEO clients like that I periodically report my work to them. Meaning, I give them updates as the work is going on.

I'm also preparing to offer a complete "site health" report before I start any actual SEO work. This will allow the client to know EXACTLY what needs to be fixed, and I can then prepare a bid package based on realistic needs. This protects both the client, and the SEO provider.

Also, be careful with backlinks. I hear a lot of reallly scary stories about Clients who have been burned by shady SEO Providers who were using black and gray hat SEO tactics in regards to building backlinks.

Thats exactly the kind of thing I'm worried about. How would I even know if they weren't transparent and really telling me what their actually doing. I'm sure i'd figure it out later on with webmaster tools or something but I rather be proactive. So when we talk to these people we should get a good idea of what their doing before they actually do anything.

Should I look for long term SEO work? Would I get better results from some one that knows they'll be accountable later on? Should I look for long term SEO work? Would I get better results from some one that knows they'll be accountable later on? 1. A really serious campaign takes time.
2. Accountability (glad you thought of that word!) is something you should ask of any SEO provider, before, during and after.
3. In regards to backlinks, there are various tools that will show you where all your backlinks are. Of course, if your SEO provider is long gone by the time
you have that information, it's probably too late.
4. References - If the SEO Provider does not have a "good" site, then certainly it would be appropriate to question their services. If they do not have a site, ask them to show you other sites to whom they have provided services.

I can't personally speak for any of the other SEO providers here, but on a personal level, I'm prepared to provide my clients with a checkup later on down the line, to see how things are going with their site. *If* I was providing backlink service, I would also provide them a spreadsheet containing every single backlink URL. And I would not request payment until they had checked (if they so desired) those links.

There are a number of reputable SEO providers here. Why not check out the Webmaster Marketplace: http://www.v7n.com/forums/webmaster-marketplace/.

-PandoraH First and foremost, you must ask for sample of their (the SEO company's) work. When new clients contact us I provide them with a list of highly competitive keywords so they can see proof in the pudding, so to speak.

Secondly, you must understand that SEO isn't immediate and takes time. For this reason, expect an engagement of between 3-6 months. Most of our clients are on a monthly retainer where we handle X amount of work for Y price. This seems to work best for us.

Regarding content, depending on the SEO company's ability to create unique articles, you may want to write such in-house. You, as the business owner/marketer, know your product best and must provide helpful information to your audience.

Lastly, good luck! You can search "SEO services" to find good SEO services company. You can get
