When I go to Admin CP, Maintenance, Update Counters, it has this AdsUAre thing at the bottom:

I don't see that in mine. I would guess that you have a version that was nulled by someone other than DGT/GYSN or one of the fakes that were uploaded here.

would upgrading to this:

fix it? cuz i already have 3.8.1. maybe "upgrading" to this new 3.8.1 might do it. you think?

If you downloaded your present copy of 3.8.1 here prior to today, I would definitely grab the new version. Previous ones were fakes.
If you're using free hosting, however, it may be as DH says: your host may be responsible and the new version won't change anything.

yea i figured out that it was my free hosting provider that was putting in those ads. but since i have 3.8.1 and i upgrade to this legit 3.8.1 that was just released on this site, will that change anything else on my forum? will it delete my users or any threads? or is it just a win-win situation for me? thanks in advance

If you already have your board set up and running and it's not giving you any problems (except the ad thing which won't be fixed by re-installing) stick with it. In the strictest sense of the word, neither version is "legit", so as they say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.
On the other hand, if running an "unknown" null makes you a bit nervous and you haven't (or can't) check the code thoroughly, then by all means, grab the most recently uploaded version and re-upload the files. Unless you've done some heavy mods, it shouldn't change anything.
