How much success have you had with this?

And when I say this, I mean posting on forums with links in your signatures. I've personally noticed a jump in my s.e. position in Google with the keywords I'm using for my anchor text. However, it has begun to slow from me being on the 9th page to now being on the 3rd to not being able to really move up from there. I've used directory submissions but they take forever to actually look at your site and approve it for listing. I'm wanting to know how your luck has been when it comes to improving your s.e.o. through forum posting with link sigs. Very little - none if any. I recently swapped domains on three forums (on one I have about 3,700 - over 3 years) - and neither site has blipped in over 8 weeks.

IMHO Depends on the competition in the index (how many other pages there are, how long they've been there, how many links they have etc etc ) There are so many outbound links on a forum post (ads, sigs etc) and the pages are so deep (imagine if the forum home page is tbPR5, what are 3/4 folders down - PR1 or PR2 at best) that the link quality is often low. Hundreds of these don't really stack up to one good one.

On the other hand, get a site to have one contextual link on their home page to you and bank - off you go. Sometimes people get a little over excited when they checked the Google back links and see that they are getting links from their forum signatures. But the links Google chooses to show you is no indication of how much they're helping you.

So I would have to agree and say - little to no effect other than getting your site indexed. My experience says that Forums link have more quality than any other links.and even if you are getting edu links on any blogs, because these are permanent links. Never thought about that benefit, I just use like the social networking effect. In saying that, I get a lot of direct referrals from people who like my blog posts, particularly in our own local market That's the consensus. It holds enough water to fill a well. The manier the people, the faster the fill-up. Ah, the power of referrals. Yes forum posting is a good off page seo tactic and it provide quality back links that are very beneficial to have good ranking in search engine. That's two jumps in logic with no basis at all!

Community Question: does anyone think that posts like this are tantamount to spam? Totally depends on competition, to say ALL forum signature backlinks are useless would be a bit too harsh. You just have to find the right forum that is in your niche and that doesn't have tons of webmasters promoting their sites on it.

Google won't hold backlinks from sites like Digitalpoint forums in high regard because there are thousands of webmasters on there linking to their websites that are in all sorts of different niche's. However if you were to join say a parenting forum and promoted your parenting blog via a signature you might get good results (mostly because barely any other webmasters will be promoting sites there and because your site would be in the same niche). This is how I look at it "holistically":

Many forums might rank highly but the individual posts often have little long term value - also, they are often 2/3 links deep from the home page and there may be many posts above you with other OBL's thus further removing what little authority was left to transfer. All links have some value. A backlink from a large forum wont pass much juice to your link destination and thats probably why the OP has found his site leveling off on page 3. He's going have to do some more quality link building, article writing, social bookmarking to name a few to get further movement.

However, I post once in a while in niche forums. I'm of the opinion that back links from these like niche forums carry more weight due our mutual relevance. I think that forum posting also has the benefit of some additional traffic to your site, which may have some impact on rankings in addition to the backlinks. Forum participating is one the best link building strategies for improving search engine rankings within short period of time. Need to choose right forums for link building. If we choose niche related forum, definitely the keyword ranking will improve.
