Does anyone have a way of knowing how many quality links you would actually need to compete for a keyword? IS it based on what the competition has? Is there truly anyway of really knowing?? it depends on the quality of the back links. i suggest you to find out how many backlinks your competitors are having on the same keyword and try to get more backlinks from higher pr websites. that will be leading your website serp. What is your opinion on getting thr most valuable links? If you noticed the changes in SERP's in Google about good quality links there's nothing wrong to make so many quality links as long as you avoid to be noticed as SPAM... try to make a lot of quality content originally written by you to avoid infringement, but creating too many quality links also your putting yourself with a lot of work.

I guess there's no limit in creating many quality links as long as it is a good backlinks. Is there truly anyway of really knowing?? You already have answered to your question on your post! That is exactly what you should do, make a research on competitors backlinks and if you will make it deeper it can help you really a lot! Check their backlink sources, check also anchor text and you will soon be clear how much and what kind of backlinks you need! It all depends on how many your top competitors have, and what kind of quality they are. When it comes to links, quality can be much more important than quantity. For example, the person in the #1 spot for your keyword may have 2,000 backlinks - but none of them are high-quality. You wouldn't need 2,001 to beat him; you would just need a bunch of high-quality links.

A good way to start your link-building campaign is to analyze the top 3 results. Take a look at how many links they have, and where they came from. Heck, you might even be able to get links from some of the same places! For example, if one of your competitors has a link from XYZ directory, log onto XYZ directory's site and see if you can get a link, too! As many as possible, that's the answer
