How Link Juice Works?

Hi,

i have been trying to figure out SEO on my own since the people i work for dont have a F'ing clue.

from what i have read about link juice and link exchange i have come up with a picture in my head of how it works and i want to know if i am right or totally confused.

here are my thoughts on link juice

maybe my concept of juice is off but i see it as real juice (i like to imagine a pitcher of OJ)

your page rank and backlinks determine how big a pitcher you have

if you have a gallon of juice and you want to split it between 10 people they can all get a nice glass of juice, but if you want to share it with 20 people everyone only gets half a glass.

but the more juice you give away to others the less you are keeping for your site

if you give away all of your juice then you are going to die of thirst.

please let me know what you think

Peace The last line brought a smile to my face - 'if you if you give away all of your juice then you are going to die of thirst.'. That may be true for real juice, not link juice. The number of outgoing links you have on your page or site does not dilute your link juice or pagerank. But if you link to bad neighborhood or spam sites then you can find yourself penalized for it. The best number of links per page is around ~50. If you get any more than that, the human visitors to visit your site will think it smells like a link farm or a badly run directory. That is not good for ranking for your site. If you keep number and quality of outgoing links from your site into good control and organization then there is no need to worry about 'link juice distribution to hungry people'... Now my thoughts on link juice. Personally I prefer to think of a link as a vote rather than juice. It is a vote from what ever site puts the link to whatever site the link leads to. Now just like the real world when someone unknown recommends or votes for someone it usually does not mean much, but when someone with power and authority makes the vote it will pull a lot more weight. So when you are attempting to gain votes try to gain them from the most authoritative places you can. You can tell a website is authoritative by checking PR and if they have a .gov or .edu rather than a .com or .org. Also if you can gain backlinks from big names such as cnn, problogger, twitter, walmart, ect. these all have quite a bit of authority. You should also be worried about relevancy it is always better to acquire links that are in your niche rather than general or off topic links.

With outgoing links it is a bit different. You can have 10 times the out going links compared with incoming links as long as they are going out to good places. One good example of this is http://www.dmoz.org they have a list of a couple hundred directories. Alot more than the 50 or 100 link "limit", but since this list actually has a reason and the webmaster had a reason for having a large amount of outgoing links it was not affected simply because they have quite a few out going links. I also checked and with this list they did not add the rel="no follow" tag within the anchor tags. Anyway this is just a few examples of when it is ok to have many outgoing links on a page without feeling consequences. I did like what Traffic Bug said about no linking to bad neighborhoods which
