How do I output an image with .data as an extension

Attachments for my forum are stored as \[code\]filename.data\[/code\] even when the file is a \[code\].jpg\[/code\] image. I wrote a mobile optimized site for my forum but having difficulty in trying to use the stored attachments from the full site.How can I display these attachments in my mobile forum along with text when the extension is \[code\].data\[/code\] I can't use the \[code\]<img src>\[/code\] tag as that doesn't work.
