how do i create a search and display box

I am trying to add a search feature on my site. I want the visitor to be able to enter a name, have it search a database that I've created, and display information in a box on the page. Can this be done easily? I found a website that has this feature. Can I modify the code on this site to make it work on mine? The site that I found is Pokernotes.com. Any help would be appreciated.
