How do i create a .asf file to stream audio

Windows Media Encoder converted my .mp3 into .wma instead of the .asf file type that i guess is the traditional file type used to stream windowsmedia content but.....

I went ahead and linked to a .asx text file that i created which had the url of the .wma file that i made above.......it worked in terms of streaming......ive read that the .wma is pretty much the same as .asf

My question is what's the difference between the two and if there is one how do i convert into .asf?
