How can a website that does not sell a product, make money?

I wanted to start a blog/ informational site. I was curious as to how something like this could make money. I understand Google Adsense is one way.

Can you use Adsense with other banner programs?
Will search engine optimization bring in any direct money?
If I am not selling anything, is the only way to make money through advertising?

Yes, you can use Google Adsense with any other non adult, nopoker, drugs etc banner advertising networks. But make sure they are not somewhat similar to google ads.
