Guest Book

Hey, gang. Hope everyone is well.

I have a new client that wants a Guest Book. I haven't messed with them very much at all so thought I would ask the best group of folks I know what their opinions are.
(some hopefully well-placed browning there)

Is the Advanced Guest Book here the best way to go? Is it hard to setup?

thanks.
I would use Viper Guestbook if I were going to put one up.
Thanks, Bruce.

( sorry about getting the wrong forum )
Viper is great option
and can moderate the posts
or you can set the entries to need approval.
Went to the site and they are doing away with Viper due to some vulnerablities .

Maybe I better wait on that.
You might want to take a look at LAZARUS GUESTBOOK by carbonize, a member of this forum.
Viper is stable in the latest version
but they are working on a new version
so anyone using the latest version is ok.

I would check out the both viper and Lazarus Guestbook.
Thanks, Curtis. How do I go about setting it up?
I would copy your current config.inc.php file to your computer and use it to mofdify the new config.inc.php file
see the doc > readme.txt file for install info.

backup your database in cpanel > backup > download database first.

And ther is a forum for more help on the site.
To my knowledge Viper is a dead project.
QUOTE

There will be no further releases of this script but I'm working on a new guestbook script that uses most parts of the ViPER Guestbook engine and provides all new features that were planned for version 1.3

but they do not mention if it will use the same database format as Viper to let you upgrade easily. Odds are they will.

If you need any help with Lazarus or Advanced Guestbook then feel free to email me or use my forums.

Thanks to curtis for the word of mouth advertising
Thanks. I just downloaded Lazarus and I will install it.
I may need some help, but we will see.

thanks again.
Make sure to copy your existing admin/config.inc.php file
so you can edit the new one and put the same database and URL info in it.
There are instructions in the doc folder.

After I copied the old config file off
I removed my current guestbook folder files
and uploaded the new ones including the edited version of the config file
and then followed the doc file.
Actually I am not very familiar with php.

Will I get into trouble?
Not if you follow the instructions.
I don't post here much but I wasted a few hours trying to get the CPanel installed AdvancedGuestBook to go. It loops in some of the admin functions. From what I could find it needs a later version of PHP (looks like it'll work with PHP > 5). I even downloaded the latest version and installed in manually. No Joy. So I took the recommendation to try Lazarus Guestbook and ran with it.
It's a manual install but it's a breeze if you know how to setup the database from CPanel. Worked great right out of the box and allows for moderated posts. I like that.....

D.

The version of Advanced Guestbook cPanel installs is out of date like most of the scripts cpanel offers. The latest version of AG is 2.4.1. You could just install AG from cpanel then update to Lazarus using the agupdate script.
