Google Sitemap :- Help or Make It Worse

Hi, I was searching many forums, articles I was wondering that some webmasters say that site maps is very good on their website. So far when some of said that it is a bad addition to your site, but let me know, does it help the site or make it worse. .in my experience it does nothing.
