Google Must Not Like Me Anymore

I have been accustomed to receiving 40-50 visitors a day directly from Google search results. The average has been steadily and consistently climbing.

Recently I added a few pages to my site in an attempt to improve my search rankings. I have an e-book that I offer for free in return for an e-mail address. It is packed with good content that I believe would help me improve my search rankings.

The book comes in a PDF format. When I try to search for it using Google I get no results. So, since Google couldn't "find" the book, basically what I did was take each chapter and make it a separate page on my site so that the content could be found.

I did this and within a week my traffic from Google plummeted and has stayed there. I am lucky if I get 10 visitors a week directly from Google now. Obviously I did something that did not appeal to them, but am not sure why adding these e-book chapters would be "against the rules". Since Google couldn't originally find the e-book why would adding each chapter as a separate page cause problems? If I just remove the pages will that resolve the problem, if that is what caused it in the first place?
