I am trying to make sense of how to use the google sitemaps.

I have loaded the phython files into my root directory and launched it, but it gives me a bunch of XML info that just relates to its source code and not to any content from my site. Am I doing soemthing wrong? Has anyone ever used this sitemap generator?
Help Appreciated....
p.s. What variables (if any) must I edit in the source files...?
