FTP problems

I've been having problems trying to FTP my files to the hosting server. And I'm not really sure where the problem is: FTP software, ISP, hosting server...I just don't know. It's as if there isn't a full connection made. Could someone give me an idea of what things to check, so that I could pin-point the breakdown in the system?

Does anyone recomend a certain FTP software? I want something that is simple and basic, that's solid and works. I don't need, or want, all the bells and whistles.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me.What software do you use?

I use Elite FTP very quick and easy to use, I also have Terrapin FTP I dont use it that much but also vey easy to use.Im not sure what OS you're using but i use this ftp explorer and haven't had any problems to date.
Is this FTP program something that's built into IE 6?Get a reliable program like FTP explorer [http://www.ftpx.com/].

Check the FTP Upload settings. You will need: The Server Address. This is always different to the web site address.
The Initial Folder (sometimes a blank or "/", other times something like /htdocs or similar).
A User Name and a Password.

Make sure that you select the correct Mode for transfers: ASCII for Text, and Binary for Images and Programs, otherwise the files are corrupted on transfer.

If you decide to use FTP Explorer, then look at the text window at the bottom of the screen. It shows the logging in, and file transfers, with all status and error messages to help you.I use SmartFTP. Its a fantastic program. I think its best to use dedicated FTP software, as some FTP servers don't allow access through browsers.

Get it here (www.smartftp.com)

This has everything you need in an FTP program.I agree Smart Ftp is the best i've usedWell, I Download ed both Explorer and Smart. Not sure what I'll try first. We'll see if this works any better.
