A 'core' file is a memory dump generated by the OS when a process is crashed. It can be used for debugging purposes. Unless you have currently problems with processes crashing, you can safely remove these files.

To remove a variable for troubeshooting, you should disable hooks to see if the process that is crashing stops.

Without knowing your circumstances, anything is a guess at this point. BUT you might want to run the suspect file utility to see if vBulletin thinks you have a problem.

To disable hooks, add in the following line of code in config.php file inside vBulletin directory to disable the plugin system, at the top of the file right after <?php line.

define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);
