I currently have a foundation degree which I am going to top up to a BSC in Software Development through the Open University (Distance Learning). One of the modules that I have to do is final year project. I am rather stumped on ideas. I know what technology I would like to use and have an idea, however I dont have an idea for an exact application.I am planning on doing a database (mySQL), which will use a web crawler to retrieve information from the internet and populate tables. However I have no idea on a specific application. The modules I am taking for the top up areDatabase:Theory and Practice (Not a new area)OOP using Java (Not a new area)Ebusiness (Totally new, covers SOA, XML and security protocols) I currently work for a software company which produces and manages large scale enterprise solutions. Our database gave about 64, 000, 000 transactions a year.I would like my project to be more geared towards a marketable professional piece of software rather than an academic project that has no bearing in the software industry.I have experience with Java, C++, HTML, php and SQL. Ideally I would like to incorporate a back end server and a front end client into my project to demonstrate that I understand how they work.Does anyone have any suggestions that would help point me in the right direction. As I believe that something like a database to manage a DVD collection is a bit too basic for a final year project. When I did my foundation degree my software development project for that was a Service Desk call logging software. It was a LAMP server with an HTML front end, and it used a Microsoft Access database. I would like to go beyond this level as to be honest I didnt find it particularly challenging.
