Feeling overwhelmed at all this

I have been taking a intro to programming class since the new semester started in the beginning of December. I seem to have no problem following the tutorials in the book, as they basically spell it all out and what not. Its reading the text and duplicating it, which anyone with sight and fingers can replicate.

In this book, there are several what they call 'Programming Challenges'. I am lost. I feel very overwhelmed with this class, and I have told the instructor as much. She said 'youll get it'. Gee thanks. Its been about a month, and I still have no clue.

My basic problem is that i dont know anything. There are no basics being taught in class, they are just reviews of the instructors life. I can do without that.

If I sit down and try these 'programming challenges' I can make the UI just fine, thats easy. I dont know what to do from that. I know what I would like to do, but I cant seem to get the syntax right. I ordered a Visual Basic 6 and .NET cheatsheet, but I cant seem to get the syntax right either.

It comes down to I think Im going to fail this class, and I dont have another 1700 bucks to try again. Any pointers or whatever, it would be great. My friend hasnt been much help, he just asked me to create a basic calculator. I created the UI, and managed to get the buttons to work, but I cant seem to get the numbers to appear in a string as they are entered. Only one number is displayed. Its very frustrating.
