why does the favicon have to be a .ico file. and not a gif (for example).

cause i would like to make an animated favicon, is this possible? :confused:no, not possible. it has to be an ico fileThe way it's set up, right now it has to be an ico file. However, there was a time, not long ago, when ico's weren't available for everyone to change.

Maybe you can create a program to animate them and then sell your program to Microsoft!why is it that on my site the favicon.ico does not show up in IE, yet it does in netscape and in opera?

www.carpenoctem.tvI have noticed that in IE5 it doesn't show up all the time.

but I have IE6 and it didn't show up either. couldn't tell yuou what is wrongonly will show if it is in favorites

http://www.accessfp.net/faviconico.htmSpeaking of Fav Icons, I noticed that MozillaNews.org (http://www.mozillanews.org/) has two Fav Icons: one is a .ICO file and the other is an animated GIF.

I am currently using Phoenix [Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021228 Phoenix/0.5], and the icon in the browser's tab is animated. Pretty neat.having recently experimented with these little buggers, i can tell you everything there is to know about them.

not really.

but i do know that

1) IE will not display them until and unless you've added the site to your Favorites,
2) Netscape doesn't care and will display them anyway, and
3) favicons can be animated, but hardly anybody ever does this. probably because it is stupid and annoying. or maybe not very many browsers can handle it.

Irfanview, one of the greatest graphics viewers ever, can convert almost any image to a favicon, too. you can get it from Download .com (http://Download .com.com/3000-2192-10132330.html?tag=lst-0-1)@ CarpeNoctum: try this, add site to favorites, close all IE windows ,open your site again and now it should be working.
