Enlighten me on SERP.

It seems no less than a year ago all I could read about was: backlinks=pagerank=trafficNow it seems everyone says not to worry about pagerank, and focus on SERP. I guess this is where I get confused, does a high PR not equate to good SERP any longer? And if not, what does? It seems just having an "SEO" site won't put you in the top 10 for your keywords. What am I missing? Is it possible to break the top 10 on google with a niche keyword and a pagerank 3 site?I think the idea is that the only way to break into the top 10 is with a niche keyword. The competition for major keywords is way to intense for new sites to tackle. It just means stop concentrating on getting a higher Pagerank, be concerned with having good positioning in the serps. Higher Pagerank is good and can make it easier to get good positioning, but I have alot of Pagerank 4 sites in competitive markets with 1st page positioning. You don't have to get high PR to get good positioning.Last year one site of mine had a Pagerank of 7...bottom of page 1. This year it has a Pagerank of 4...top of page 1. Google changes the algorithym for the way Pagerank is measured all the time, so getting a high Pagerank dosen't mean much.Even without Page Rank one can get higher SERP.
