Editing Blog Post URL to Improve Ranking

I have a wordpress blog where i would like to change URLs for several of the entries. The reason I want to do this is to optimize better for keywords that are relevant to the blog post, but were never optimized correctly. I never put those specific keywords in the URL of the post, which is a huge rookie mistake.

Would going back and changing the URL of the blog post hurt or help my search engine rankings? If you change the URLs of few pages then make sure you set up redirection code to redirect old URLs to new URLs other wise you will loose your rankings. Updating a content is good but playing with urls is bad. check whether the inner pages are having any PR or not and whether they are indexed aswell, if not then go for it, if yes then avoid playing with urls. The inner pages i want to edit are all unranked, but they are all indexed on google already. Would I be able to just change the URL and do the entire canonical redirect technique?
