I'm creating a duplicate website and wondering what thing I need to be careful on so I don't damage the current exisiting site that is ranking well. Any thoughts? I think I understand what you're trying to do then.

There is some disagreement about the risks of duplicate content, but given the possibility (which I personally think is more of a probability) of problems, I would suggest that before you put the second site up, you simply install a noindex directive on the front end. Once you have it loaded with the new content, and duplicate content is no longer an issue, you can remove the noindex. Hmm, still not totally clear what you are doing. Are the copies on different domain names?

You can do like Doc said
or
You can rebuild the site in a test folder on the existing domain and tell the bots to stay out of that folder in your robots.txt file. Once complete, you can move the files to the root of the domain hosting. Duplicate websites are heavily penalized in Google. Their algorithm is now tuned to discourage spammers from copying web content and putting it up under another domain. I dont think however it will damage your main sites rankings (otherwise anyone could copy a website and get their competition hurt). Yes, basically it's just the framework that will be the same. Everything else will 100% unique content. If the content is unique then you have absolutely no problem! Thanks. That's what I figured!
