Domain Age Question

So was thinking, what do search engines use to determine the age of a domain name? Do they use the time the website has been online and indexed by that particular search engine or do they use the domain registry info (how long that domain has been owned by that one person)?

Could someone, in theory, hold onto a domain name for a certain period of time and pass the "sand-box" time? Have heard of the sand-box, but not sure if one actually exists - just something I've read

Thanks in advance!

One more aspect of link age has to do with trusting the permanence of a link(editorial citation) itself. For better or worse, older links are given more importance because they imply a long-term citation.

Have heard of the sand-box, but not sure if one actually exists - just something I've read Certainly no one can be sure that "sand-box" actually exists, but surely time based indicators are considered by Google. Site age and link age create plenty of trust, and thus old websites tend to have good rankings in Google when compared to young or new websites. If link building has been done for a website, there is a very good chance of the trust being passed, and thus passing the "sand-box" time. Hope this helped! From my view domain age has some effect in SEO of your website There is no sand box.......per the G....

Age is a factor....(wish it was the webmasters age).....
Once the DN is activated and a "holding" page is posted...the spiders seem to be able to find it...
I have a holding page on page one........(I don't know how...so don't ask)

But...remember ..age is only one factor.....new domains do make #1... Age of website is the major factor in the SEO. I think Sandbox exists. I think this is the right answer.. they go after whois Search engines consider domain age from the date of registration. Thats what we think. Thank you for all of your replies they are very insightful and much appreciated!

@LeoS - not sure why link age did not occur to me but that makes sense and it would make sense why search engines would also take into consideration how long the links connecting to your site have been there too and not 100% how old your actual domain name is. Great observation.

@Jim G - Will definitely keep that in mind thanks for your words of wisdom

@ theentry & Reliable-seoservices - That is what I was leaning towards too. Theoretically would seem the best/easiest way to test domain age.

Again, thanks for everyones insight! I think they consider both parameters but i myself think the time which a website has been online and seen by search engines is more important than the registration time. From my experience age is a big factor in getting long-tail rankings and of course the shorter rankings are going to take time anyways to build up. From what I can tell looking at the factors plus how Google indexes and keeps data it seems they figure the date by the first time they crawled it on their servers and not any other things like when it was registered. My website (url removed) is on top of Google search results for many seo related keywords and it's only 5 months old. So I doubt that it has to to with age. My advice is: submit your site to google, create a webmaster account, and submit an xml sitemap every week or every time you update your content. That will speed things along. :-) Domain age is only a minor factor in SEO, content is far more important. How about we see what Matt Cutts (Google Employee) has to say on the subject.

i have seen quit some new domain name get ranked fast & on top 5 ranks. Few months old domain name beat the big brother very easily.

if domain age is key, age old domain names will be filling up the first page and sorted that way. where will be new guys be? the domain age is one of the factor of seo It doesn't matter how old the site is, without quality contents and quality backlinks to support it, well it really falls down in the rankings. Was merely interested in what was used to measure the age of a domain as I was muddling it around in my head and became a bit stumped. haha

@Everyone - Thanks again for all the responces! Yes the older the better!
