I should probably password protect my directories for my website, but have not because I am unsure if this will affects my rankings with google, yahoo, ect. What are the pros and cons.... is it all pro? Does this affect what the bots will crawl. I am already indexed and have above average rankings for multiple keywords. Are there certain directories that I don't want to password protect?-Your replies appreciatedAre those directories viewable to the public at the moment? Do they contain personal information of clients? What are the current permissions on them? They don't contain personal informationThey are viewable to the public at the momentCurrent permisions are not password protectedWhat do you mean by current permissions? Is this a directory password protection feature or permissions of the actual file name? I do not understand how permissions work for the file name, but mine look like this:Mode User Group World Read x x x Write x x x Execute x x x Permission 7 7 7 Should I password protect any of these directories in particular? Which ones should I not password protect?_private_vti_bin _vti_cnf_vti_log _vti_pvt _vti_txtcgi-bin _vti_inf.htmltmplogsmailpublic_ftpwwwimagesmusic_samplesvideosI am not sure if this will cut down on my bandwidth, keep people from dling inappropriate files, or mess up part of my code that visitors see when they visit my site.777 give everyone the right to do whatever they want. That's not what you want. You want 700 on all those _vti_ files. All you need to do is set the correct permissions. Read some text files on web server permissions. And setting directory permissions is different than passwording your directories.By just setting permissions and with modifications to your robots.txt file, you can control what gets indexed. If you actually have to restrict access to particular areas with a password, then the spiders will be stopped also, and that content will not be indexed.
