I was just wondering if the age of my site has an effect on ranking and how much is the effect?
Also does the expiration date of my domain have an effect on how google will rank me?
Can building backlinks offset this or should i just go ahead a secure my domain for 5+years? Most people but would say domain age does have an effect but how much is debatable. I don't think it has too much of an effect but I think it does help... more importantly are the links and trust it may have built up over the years.
If you purchase your domain say for 5 years instead of 1 year, this is meant to be an indication to Google that you are more serious about your domain and supposed to have a small positive effect. I think the effect would be negligible if any effect at all.
Building backlinks will always help regardless.
"How much weight does the number of years a domain is registered for have on your ranking?"
+ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1_1NQWQJ2Q Age of domain is HUGE! As for the amount of years you prepay for the registration? Zero effect on SEO, IMO.
I have a generic domain that was registered in 1995, it ranks beautifully with no off-site SEO. I have never done link building in the 5 years I've owned it.
I've been in this business since the 90's. The one thing I know without question, is that the single most important aspect of SEO is your DOMAIN NAME!
The first thing I tell my clients is, spend the money upfront on a quality domain, and it'll save you loads of money in the long run. It'll require less link building to rank. period. For my high-end clients who are very serious about their business, I advise them to allocate $XXXX for domain budget, before we even talk about design or SEO or apps. if you buy an used domain look in archive.org for what was on it in the past. The age of domain indexed in Google is counting. The expiration date is not counting. This thread should of been locked at post #3.
Its evident that google may or may not use it for ranking.
If they did.. DONT WORRY! Its not going to be worth any weight whatsoever that cant be fixed just by having an extra link or some good content.
