Do certain holidays "offend you"? - Serious discussion

First off, this discussion is NOT to combat or go against anyones religion &/or belief. This is a simply ADULT discussion about words & or their meanings.

Anyone who is found badgering another members religion or belief for ANY reason will receive an infraction & be removed from the thread.

The question: During the "holiday" season people take the phrase "marry christmas" literal depending on their religion &/or what they truely believe in. If someone walked up to you & said "merry christmas" but you believe in something different, does it offend you?

I bring this up because I currently live in Boston. One of the most diverse cities in the world. We have people from all countries, regions, cultures, languages, etc.

In my work place it is actually a warning & a possible time off without pay if you use the phrase "Merry Christmas". Instead we must use "happy holidays" to not offend people.

Does this term actually offend you or your religion? Please let me know how you feel.

Remember this is a MATURE conversation. Converse only if you have something worth adding.

Thanks!

I believe it is another way to remove Christ from the scene. Merry Christmas. It was a celebration for all who felt to.

Reading material: The Christmas Season

I dont see a reason to be upset when they celebrate the holidays diffrent and I dont think they should get mad if we say Merry Christmas....... just my thoughts.

My opinion: Someone who objects to "Merry Christmas" is showing their own personal intolerance. Aren't we all supposed to be tolerant of everyone's religion these days? It seems to me those who demand that we be tolerant of their religious beliefs are many times the least tolerant when it comes to others expressions of Christianity.

Here in the US, city, state and federal governments have come under fire in the last couple of decades for displaying Christmas decorations on public property, but when the governing bodies offer concessions in the form of the display of menorahs etc. along with the traditional decorations, that's not enough for the objecting parties; separation of church and state is the usual argument that comes into play. In the truest sense of the constitution, they are in the right, but my own personal feeling is as Filez pointed out - taking Christ out of the picture. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I like to see the season celebrated as it always has been all my life. If that makes me a curmudgeon, so be it.

Lol, well I'm a Zen Buddhist with a masters degree in history and comparative religions. I also have the added bonus of having grown up all over the "Holy Land" with an archeologist grandfather, so I get a great laugh out of Christmas. But offended, no.

This is the type of reply I was hoping to see.

Most people find certain religions to be "silly" but in all honest, why do people try so hard to put someones religion down? Scientology is a great example. This is an extremely farfetched religion but as much as I think so, those who truely practice it think not.

I am not offended nor can I sit here & say "heh what a joke". Who am I to say they are right or wrong?

This is not a Zen comment. If I remember correctly you, you are not to approve of any other religions but on the other hand not comment on them either.

hehehe :D

in my regards .... festival has not changed neither the season or occasion have changed
like Christmas .
But the thing that have changed is the people who enjoy it

i don't know much abt Christmas
but in Durga Puja like u have in christmas

my granny told me that in those times people used to sing songs in those occasions and were a sign to show bravery and brotherhood among themselves

Nowdays , people do not sing songs but rather loud speakers sing rather fucking songs for us at the loudest tempo and this is a perfect occasion to show anger and how much wealthy u are

todays , festivals are not spiritualistic but it's contrast can be said

But still , I love festivals
Bye bye fokes

PS : I know i did not get ur message in this thread , just wrote down what i feel like in festivals :D

Happy Christmas mr grace

I have several different religions through out my family. And it pisses me of that people say "seasonal greetings". Its only because there are some very correct people in the government who think its correct. In england several schools give up celebrating X-mas & easter cause there are %30 muslim if not more. IN their country they wont even let us build our church and other places of worship. A western woman cant even walk on their streets without being touched. THEY how ever wont say instead of "Eid Mubarak" "Happy Celeprations" or "HAppy slaughter". I would not be offended. It would just piss me of. I would say Merry X-mas. You should respect other religions but not change yours because some people HIGH in the government thinks it might offend people. All the other religions were asked "Did it offend you when we say Merry Christmas" they all said no.

But what do i know im just a 14 yr old
