disagreement between whois and archive.org data

Anybody has an idea why sometimes there is a huge mismatch between
whois data and archive.org?

e.g.: whois (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/results.jsp?domain=baddebtsonline.com">http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/r ... online.com</a><!-- m -->) vs archive.org
(<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://baddebtsonline.com">http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://baddebtsonline.com</a><!-- m -->)

whois says:

Created on: 11-Oct-04

whereas archive.org shows pages from 1998?

If the domain was created in 2004, how could there be pages in 1998?

I'm confused here. It looks like the domain was killed and then reborn.

Does it mean that the domain is 3 year old or 9?

I'd imagine 3, since everybody relies on whois data to poll for domain's age.
